Case Study: AeroFarms increases yields, conserves resources and improves flavor with Dell Technologies

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Preview of the AeroFarms Case Study

Indoor vertical farm uses data-driven insights from IoT deployment to increase yields, conserve resources and improve flavor

AeroFarms, the Newark-based world leader in indoor vertical farming, faced the challenge of scaling precision, sustainable food production—improving yields, flavor and traceability while conserving water and land. To turn vast amounts of farm sensor and imaging data into actionable insights, AeroFarms partnered with Dell Technologies, deploying solutions including Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Tablets, Dell Edge Gateways 3001/3003, Dell EMC Consulting IoT Advisory Service and IoT Vision Workshop, Dell EMC Ready Solutions for Machine Learning, and Microsoft Azure.

Dell Technologies implemented an edge-to-core-to-cloud architecture: edge gateways and rugged tablets collect and relay sensor and multi-spectral imaging data to a local core cluster and Azure, supported by Dell EMC consulting and ML-ready infrastructure. The solution enabled seed-to-package tracking, 3D tray imaging with real-time anomaly alerts to operators, and automated analytics that improve process optimization, quality control and scalability. As a result AeroFarms can harvest richer data to optimize taste, texture and nutrition, scale faster with headroom for new use cases, and advance toward measurable gains in yield and resource efficiency.
