Faster VMware backups and database protection

Scripps Health, a major San Diego–area healthcare provider, was facing long backup windows, frequent failed jobs and slow SQL database protection while trying to nightly protect roughly 4,000+ VMware VMs and meet regulatory retention and Epic requirements. To address this, Scripps engaged Dell Technologies and implemented Dell EMC Data Protection Suite with Data Domain appliances and DD Boost for SQL (plus PowerProtect/DD Boost integrations) to provide a modern, easy-to-manage data protection platform.

Dell Technologies’ solution cut nightly VMware backup windows from 18–26+ hours to about 10–12 hours for 4,000+ VMs, delivered up to ~200:1 deduplication/compression ratios, and accelerated critical SQL backups using DD Boost, enabling “set it and forget it” operations, reliable restores and compliance with Epic’s secondary-share requirement via Data Domain replication to a DR site. As a result, Scripps met SLAs, simplified management, improved resiliency and freed IT to focus on innovation in patient care.
