Case Study: Sentara Healthcare achieves rapid, secure cloud backups and instant restores with Dell Technologies PowerProtect DDVE

Fast, uncomplicated cloud data protection

Sentara Healthcare, which operates 12 hospitals across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, needed fast, reliable off‑site backups for critical patient and financial data from numerous remote sites and acquired facilities. To avoid the cost and complexity of on‑premises infrastructure, Sentara turned to Dell Technologies, deploying PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) and Avamar Virtual Edition in Microsoft Azure alongside their existing PowerProtect appliances and Data Protection Suite.

Dell Technologies implemented DDVE and Avamar in Azure (including deployment via the Azure Marketplace), integrating with Sentara’s vSAN infrastructure to enable compressed, low‑bandwidth off‑site backups with encryption. The solution was rapidly deployed—initially in a day and a half—and delivered measurable impact: protected PHI and PCI data off‑site, faster restorations (including instant restores to colocation sites), reduced on‑prem infrastructure costs, and improved operational ease and performance.
