Engineering Firm Virtualizes Workstations for 3D Applications

EBM, a German engineering firm working with CAD and graphics‑intensive 3D building models, needed a high‑performance, low‑latency virtualization solution that could scale as workloads grow. They engaged Dell Technologies to replace local workstations with a virtualized environment using Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 servers, Nvidia Tesla P40 GPUs and a VMware virtualization stack (including Horizon View 7) to meet demanding graphics and compute requirements.

Dell Technologies implemented the solution—two PowerEdge servers hosting virtual workstations with Tesla P40 acceleration and VMware Horizon—to deliver low latency, better hardware utilization and easier scaling. The deployment currently runs 16 virtualized workstations (accessible via thin clients), is scalable to 24 on the existing hardware, reduced operating costs versus individual high‑end PCs, and improved productivity for EBM.
