Case Study: RWTH Aachen University achieves near‑real‑time edge analytics and anomaly detection with Dell Technologies' Streaming Data Platform

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Delivering real time data insights at the industrial edge

RWTH Aachen University’s Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) needed to extract real‑time insights from massive, high‑frequency manufacturing data—more than a million data points per second—to monitor and adjust production at the edge while managing large volumes and IT infrastructure. They partnered with Dell Technologies and deployed the Dell Streaming Data Platform (SDP) together with Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell PowerScale storage.

Dell Technologies implemented an on‑premises SDP edge cluster that ingests, stores and pre‑analyzes about 80 TB of data per day and captures up to 1,000 characteristic values every 0.4 ms, enabling near‑real‑time anomaly detection, automated corrective actions and enhanced predictive maintenance. The Dell solution simplified IT administration, allowed reuse of data pipelines, provided long‑term DVR‑like storage with PowerScale, and helped WZL optimize processes and reduce waste.
