Deakin University accelerates research innovation, student growth and digital learning with scalable, high-availability storage

Deakin University faced explosive growth in students, research and digital learning that drove a tenfold increase in storage needs. To meet rising demand and maintain high-availability access to student files, online learning and research data, Deakin turned to Dell Technologies, deploying Dell EMC PowerScale (with VMware virtualization) to provide scalable, enterprise storage that could grow with the university.

Dell Technologies implemented Dell EMC PowerScale to consolidate and automate storage, enabling four in-place migrations and growing capacity from 240 TB to 2.4 PB. The vendor’s solution allowed Deakin to migrate roughly 1.3 PB in two weeks with no disruption, quickly absorb research spikes (e.g., a researcher’s daily need jumping from 15 to 30 TB), and free staff to focus on software innovation while serving 62,000 students and 9,000 faculty and staff.
