Christian Brothers University protects student data and prepares for unforeseen challenges

Christian Brothers University, a private university in Memphis, needed a simpler, compliant way to protect academic and administrative data, replace a failing tape-based archive, and avoid per‑core licensing constraints they experienced with their previous VM backup. To address those challenges they turned to Dell Technologies, implementing the IDPA DP4400 appliance with Data Protection Suite, Cloud Tier and Cloud DR integrated with their VMware environment and AWS (along with a Dell EMC Unity SAN).

Dell Technologies delivered a single‑vendor, VMware‑integrated data protection stack that auto‑imports VMware backup policies, applies VM security policies to AWS, and offers one‑click restore to the cloud. The IDPA DP4400 produced an 84:1 deduplication ratio, enabled sending about 17 TB to the cloud after compression/dedupe, eliminated the need for a physical DR site, sped up backups, and reduced administrative overhead—helping the university meet federal retention rules and test or failover VMs quickly.
