Automated railcar inspections increase security and revenue with AI at the edge

Duos Technologies Group, a provider of intelligent inspection, automation, safety and security solutions, needed a way to scale AI-enabled railcar inspections at track speed without halting trains and while processing large volumes of sensor and image data at remote sites. To meet that challenge the company selected Dell Technologies hardware and software—including Dell EMC PowerEdge servers (XR2, R740/R740xd), PowerVault ME4 storage, iDRAC and Dell EMC OpenManage with VMware vSphere—to run AI inferencing and analytics at the edge.

Dell Technologies deployed rugged PowerEdge XR2 and GPU‑equipped R740 servers, PowerVault storage and remote management tools so Duos could perform 360° visualization and real‑time AI inspections as trains pass through portals. The solution enabled up to a 120:1 efficiency gain versus manual checks, inspects a typical 120‑car train in about eight minutes, processes up to 1.3 TB of data per site daily, yields model inferencing accuracy up to 99%, and delivers $3,000 saved per iDRAC instance—providing scalable, reliable edge computing across multiple industries.
