UGL Limited, the Australian engineering and maintenance contractor responsible for deploying a GSM‑R digital communications and monitoring system for Sydney Trains, needed to ensure performance, safety and scalability across tens of thousands of field devices to reduce delays and stoppages. To centrally monitor and correlate real‑time data from devices along tracks, in stations and on trains, UGL engaged Dell EMC and partner iQ Consult and selected the Dell EMC Service Assurance Suite (Smarts and Watch4net).

Dell EMC implemented the Service Assurance Suite to collect data from more than 250 base transceiver stations across a roughly 200‑mile radius and integrate logs from on‑train equipment into a single, web‑accessible dashboard. The solution gave UGL Limited instant, centralized visibility, enabled real‑time detection of impending faults, delivered predictive analytics to avoid failures, and cut root‑cause analysis time from months to minutes—improving safety, uptime and SLA responsiveness.
