Solution ensures strong authentication for secure access to criminal-justice records

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation needed to give employees and partner agencies real-time, web-based access to sensitive Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) data while protecting personally identifiable information. To meet that challenge it turned to Dell EMC, deploying RSA SecurID two-factor authentication (hardware tokens) and RSA Authentication Manager to add a one-time-password (OTP) plus PIN verification for secure remote access.

Dell EMC’s RSA SecurID solution provided durable hardware tokens and centralized authentication management, enabling secure ISP-based access statewide, eliminating costly leased lines and cutting record retrieval times from four–six weeks to seconds. The deployment helped the KBI become an early adopter of CJIS strong authentication, scaled to about 30,000 registered users across Kansas, contributed to roughly $2.5 million in annual cost savings, and supported the FBI’s move to require two-factor access into CJIS.
