A Dell EMC Case Study
Lewisville Independent School District (LISD), a Texas K–12 district of more than 60 schools serving 50,000 students, needed to modernize an outdated IT infrastructure that was slowing its 1:X digital learning initiative. Tape-based backups were slow, costly, and labor-intensive, so LISD engaged Dell EMC and implemented solutions including Avamar, VNX with FAST Suite, RecoverPoint, Data Protection Advisor, and VMware vSphere to move to disk-based, deduplicated backups and support broad virtualization.
Dell EMC’s implementation cut a full 28 TB backup from 24 hours to 40 minutes, delivered a 99% deduplication rate (reducing daily transfer to ~150–200 GB), and provided RPOs of 3–5 minutes with RTOs around 4 hours. The district virtualized ~85% of its environment, reduced full backup windows to 3–4 hours across a 97 TB deduplicated footprint, eliminated tape (projected savings of $2.2 million over three years), and lowered compute costs by about 60%, producing clear operational, performance, and cost benefits.
