Preview of the Energy Future Holdings Case Study

Energy Future Holdings - Customer Case Study

Energy Future Holdings (EFH), a Dallas-based energy company operating Luminant and TXU Energy, faced an aging, unreliable IT environment—three data centers, ~300 physical servers, long provisioning times and only ~97% availability—that limited agility in a highly competitive Texas market. To modernize, EFH partnered with Dell EMC, deploying Dell EMC’s Enterprise Hybrid Cloud running on Vblock Systems (two Vblock Systems 720 and two Vblock Systems 240) with XtremIO storage arrays.

Dell EMC implemented the Enterprise Hybrid Cloud across EFH’s production and backup sites, virtualizing more than 99% of the environment (~3,000 VMs) and enabling self-service provisioning. The deployment turned a $20M investment into an expected $54M return, cut total IT costs by 25%, improved performance by up to 50%, reduced infrastructure footprint by 50% (including closing a data center), achieved 100% availability, sped provisioning from 1.5 hours to 5 minutes, and shortened batch cycles from 4–5 hours to 2 hours or less.
