EMC replaces Dell, NetApp to boost performance and increase capacity

Peregrine Semiconductor, a fabless RFIC manufacturer, faced mounting storage and backup challenges as it prepared to operate as a public company: legacy NetApp and Dell storage were underperforming or near capacity, tape backups took 29–45 hours and didn’t meet compliance, and rapid data growth strained resources. Peregrine selected Dell EMC and implemented Dell EMC VNX unified storage with the FAST Suite, Dell EMC Avamar deduplication backup, and VMware vSphere to improve scalability, performance and data protection.

Dell EMC consolidated 135 TB of disparate storage onto a single VNX platform with FLASH‑first tiering and automated FAST Cache/FAST VP, and replaced tape with Avamar deduplication. The deployment enabled 60–70% virtualization, delivered up to 10× faster backups with dedupe rates as high as 99.7%, cut rack footprint by 50% and energy costs by 25%, reduced backup-related I/O/CPU/memory dramatically, and yielded an estimated $150,000 TCO savings over five years—sharpening performance and positioning Peregrine for growth and compliance.
