World’s first hybrid-electric horizontal drill halves fuel consumption

Normag, a Dutch industrial drilling equipment manufacturer, needed a more fuel- and cost-efficient horizontal directional drilling (HDD) solution than its initial electrical rig. To meet this challenge, Normag worked with Danfoss on a steerable drill system for groundwork applications.

Danfoss developed the world’s first hybrid-electric horizontal drilling machine, using 12 Danfoss EC-C1200 inverters to power three main electric motors and six ancillary motors. The result was a 750kW system that halved fuel consumption and emissions, reduced noise, and improved operational flexibility; in Poland, fuel use dropped from 58 liters per hour on a diesel-hydraulic rig to just 18 liters per hour.
