Water Works, Inc. retrofits Hawaiian RO plant with Danfoss pumps and reduces energy costs and CO2 emissions

Water Works, Inc., a San Diego-based designer and installer of RO and ultrapure water systems, was asked to help an upscale golf course community in Hawaii reduce the energy use and carbon footprint of its reverse osmosis plant. With very high island electricity costs, the customer needed a more efficient solution that could lower operating expenses while still supporting reliable water production. Water Works turned to Danfoss APP pump technology as the retrofit option.

Danfoss helped Water Works replace one older 75 HP centrifugal pump with two APP 26 pumps totaling 50 HP on one of four RO arrays. The retrofit delivered a 38% reduction in energy usage, with the APP-driven array becoming the plant’s workhorse and operating nearly 24/7. Water Works reported a payback time of just 18 months for the first retrofit, with a second retrofit expected to achieve similar results.
