A Danfoss Case Study
Västtrafik, Sweden’s second-largest public transportation company, needed a cleaner way to power its diesel ferries in Gothenburg while still meeting tight weight, size, and performance requirements for short, frequent trips in winter conditions. To tackle this challenge, Västtrafik worked with Danfoss on a hybrid propulsion solution for two ferries, with a system designed to support a future move to full electrification.
Danfoss implemented a DC-grid hybrid propulsion system using liquid-cooled permanent magnet motors, generators, and inverters. The solution made the powertrain about 60% smaller and lighter than comparable DC-bus systems, reduced total electric powertrain weight by around three tonnes, and kept both vessels within their 150-tonne weight limit while improving accessibility and enabling future integration of renewable energy sources.
