A Danfoss Case Study
Sisu Auto, the Finnish truck manufacturer, wanted to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its heavy-duty trucks while making minimal changes to the vehicle architecture and keeping the solution compatible with the existing drivetrain. Danfoss was brought in to develop an electric power system for a proof-of-concept hybrid truck, later intended for Sisu’s Polar Hybrid range.
Danfoss implemented a parallel hybrid drive using a Danfoss EM-PMI permanent magnet motor, EC-C1200 inverter, EC-C1200 DC-DC converter, and a supercapacitor energy storage unit. The system delivered up to 900 hp and 3800 Nm, improved low-speed torque and drivability, and reduced diesel consumption by 5–10% in the proof-of-concept vehicle; production models are expected to be more than 10% fuel efficient depending on route and load conditions.
