Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center - Customer Case Study

Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center (SOIC) in Taiwan faced the challenge of reducing emissions from its diesel ferry fleet in Kaohsiung, a busy harbor city with serious air pollution concerns. Working with Danfoss, SOIC set out to replace inefficient diesel propulsion with a more compact and manageable electrification approach for its passenger ferry operation.

Danfoss implemented a hybrid-electric drivetrain for the Ferry Happiness using EM-PMI electric motors and EC-C1200 converters to manage battery charging, power conversion, and propulsion. The result was Asia’s first hybrid electric ferry, delivering lower noise, reduced maintenance, and an estimated annual fuel saving of more than 25,000 liters, with fuel consumption already down by around 33% and potential savings of up to 50% compared with the original diesel vessel.
