A Danfoss Case Study
AffaldVarme Aarhus, the district heating utility serving Denmark’s second-largest city, needed to improve energy efficiency and add capacity without major new investments as demand from a growing population increased. Working with Danfoss and its heat exchanger brand Sondex, the customer looked for a way to upgrade existing heat exchanger stations and reduce return temperatures while minimizing disruption.
Danfoss/Sondex replaced the old plates inside the existing heat exchangers with newly designed plates, using the same dimensions so the renovation could be done quickly and without operational interference. The new plates featured less pressing depth, thinner material, and a new fishbone pattern, delivering more than 20% higher thermal performance, tangible cash savings, a return temperature of 38°C, and the ability to connect more consumers to the grid before expanding infrastructure.
