Massive grabber crane in control at Tata Steel IJmuiden

GTI Electroproject faced the challenge of refurbishing a massive grabber crane at Tata Steel IJmuiden, where downtime is costly and crane reliability is critical for unloading ships on time. To replace outdated drives from 1968, the customer needed a compact, reliable AC drive solution for hoist and trolley control in a dusty steel-plant environment.

Danfoss supplied liquid-cooled VACON® active front-end AC drives and a water chiller, with GTI Electroproject acting as system integrator for design and commissioning. The solution enabled compact installation, high protection class cabinets, heat removal without ventilating dust into the room, and regenerative energy feed-back to the mains with low harmonics. The result was reliable, trouble-free operation, faster and smoother crane response, and performance that matched the other cranes on site.
