Full-scale biogas plant in Kalundborg ensures the return of all nutrients back to nature

Bigadan, a biogas plant operator, collaborated with Ørsted to establish a large-scale facility in Kalundborg. Their challenge was to convert 300,000 tons of annual biomass waste from Novo Nordisk and Novozymes into usable energy and fertilizer, requiring a highly reliable and automated industrial process. For this, they turned to vendor Danfoss for its AC drive technology.

Danfoss provided 50 VLT AQUA Drive and VACON 100 AC drives to control critical pumps and blowers. The solution was implemented seamlessly in pre-tested container modules, ensuring a problem-free commissioning. The results were significant: the plant now produces 18 million cubic meters of biogas annually, which is upgraded to bio natural gas for 5,000 households and creates 250,000 tons of phosphorus fertilizer. This process saves approximately 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
