Danfoss helps transform supermarkets into smart stores for demand response

Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain, was looking for a way to participate in PJM Interconnection’s demand response program and reduce energy costs without disrupting the shopping experience. To do this, the company turned to Danfoss and the smart controllers already installed in its stores to manage lighting, refrigeration, and HVAC equipment more intelligently.

Danfoss implemented its Smart Store solution, using AK-SC 255 system controllers and AK-SM 880 system managers to coordinate demand response, peak shaving, and alarm monitoring across Giant Eagle locations. The result was a program that allowed more than 100 stores to curtail power during peak periods, reduce capacity charges, and lower energy use and carbon footprint while keeping store operations and food safety under control.
