Case Study: Venø Færgefart cuts fuel consumption and improves air quality with Danfoss hybrid battery retrofit

A Danfoss Case Study

Preview of the Venø Færgefart Case Study

Battery retrofit not only saves fuel but improves air quality

The customer, Venø Færgefart, operated a ferry that was consuming 90,000 liters of diesel annually for power generation. Their challenge was to reduce high fuel costs and achieve more sustainable operations. They collaborated with Danfoss Drives on a solution to retrofit the vessel with a hybrid power system.

Danfoss implemented a solution centered around a VACON NXC Air Cooled drive and a new battery bank. This system allows the ferry to run primarily on battery power, which is recharged from a shore supply, drastically reducing the need for the auxiliary generators. The result was an annual fuel reduction of 20,000 liters, leading to significant cost savings, a projected ROI under eight years, and improved air quality from lower emissions.
