Case Study: Sagrex Lemay achieves safer, more efficient limestone crushing with Danfoss VLT AutomationDrive FC 302

A Danfoss Case Study

Preview of the Sagrex Lemay Case Study

Back-channel cooling, a simple and efficient solution for the Sagrex Lemay quarry, Belgium (HeidelbergCement Group)

Sagrex Lemay, a quarry in Belgium belonging to the HeidelbergCement Group, was facing significant challenges with an aging limestone crusher. The traditional motor starters caused high current peaks, thermal overloads, and costly unplanned shutdowns whenever uncrushable material jammed the machine. The company wanted a new solution that would improve performance and eliminate these issues.

Danfoss addressed this by providing their VLT® AutomationDrive FC 302 frequency converter for a retrofitted crusher. The Danfoss solution limited the starting current, provided precise torque control to prevent damage from jams, and utilized a back-channel cooling system to prevent the technical room from overheating. This resulted in 98% drive efficiency, the elimination of thermal overloads and current spikes, and the removal of 90% of the heat load from the technical room.
