Preview of the Biomedical Manufacturing Company Case Study

Manufacturing Company Predicts Performance using Criteria

A biomedical-products manufacturer sought to boost overall productivity by adding pre-employment testing to its hiring process. To test whether cognitive skills predicted on-the-job success, management ran a pilot study using incumbent manufacturing associates.

The company administered the Criteria Basic Skills Test (CBST) to 52 associates and compared scores to 5-point performance ratings. CBST scores correlated positively with performance (r = .29, p < .05); employees scoring 34+ averaged a 4.0 rating versus 3.1 for those scoring 33 or less, high scorers had 0% unsatisfactory ratings compared with 28% for low scorers (about a 25% higher performance rating overall). Based on these results, the company implemented the CBST for all manufacturing hires.
