How Big Brothers Big Sisters adapted seamlessly to online training

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, a nonprofit matching youth with volunteer mentors since 1904, faced a critical training challenge: its federated model—one national office and 240+ independent affiliates—created a bottleneck for essential pre-match and staff training that had been delivered largely in person. When COVID-19 eliminated face-to-face sessions, the organization urgently needed a scalable, distributed learning solution to keep volunteers and staff certified and engaged.

By using Cornerstone’s Learning Experience Platform, affiliates gained direct control to deliver, develop, and share local and national training, while the national office could run compliance audits and transcript reporting centrally. Adoption surged: between February and March 2020 total logins rose 103%, online learning registrations increased 75%, monthly active users grew 44%, and monthly logins climbed from about 1,200 to 2,200–2,500—enabling more autonomous affiliates, better compliance tracking, and new initiatives like e-mentoring and specialized local courses.
