Carilion Clinic, a Roanoke, Virginia–based not‑for‑profit serving more than a million people and employing about 11,000 staff, faced recurring business challenges: frequent Epic Systems upgrades requiring role‑specific training for thousands (8,000–9,000) employees, siloed people‑management systems with little visibility, talent competition, and pressure to do more with fewer resources while maintaining quality care.

Carilion implemented Cornerstone Learning, Cornerstone Performance and Observation Checklists to deliver targeted Epic training, validate competencies, streamline audits and link learning to performance. The program enabled training of 8,000–9,000 staff every few years with 20–30 trainers, achieved 70% use of Observation Checklists, sped audit responses, improved engagement and leadership onboarding, and provided organization‑wide visibility into performance and pay trends.
