Improved Productivity and Accuracy of Monthly Spend Forecast at Scheduling and Information Services, Inc.

Scheduling and Information Services, Inc. (SIS), a Northwestern U.S. project planning and controls firm, was struggling with a multibillion-dollar program made up of 37 schedules that were not cost- or resource-loaded, relied on Excel for contractor expenditure forecasts, and suffered from inconsistent WBS/cost account structures. To address these gaps SIS selected Contruent’s ARES PRISM project controls software for its Primavera P6 integration, earned value management (EVM) capabilities, and flexible coding structure.

Contruent implemented ARES PRISM to link time-phased costs to schedule activities, enforce consistent WBS/cost coding, and provide robust reporting and error-flagging. The result was a jump in monthly spend forecast accuracy from about ±15% to ±4%, more than double the monthly forecasting productivity on the $1B+ program, and savings of roughly half an FTE per month; SIS also reduced schedule cost-loading costs to about one-fifth of contractors’ quotes.
