Maryland needed a way to enhance motorist and worker safety in work zones

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) faced a significant challenge in protecting both motorists and roadside workers from speed-related crashes in highway work zones, which are a major cause of fatalities. To address this, they partnered with Conduent, who implemented a scanning LIDAR automated speed enforcement solution to monitor traffic without putting law enforcement officers at risk.

Conduent deployed mobile speed enforcement vehicles equipped with scanning LIDAR to capture images of speeding violators. This solution led to a dramatic improvement, reducing work zone speeding by over 90 percent. Since the program's start in 2010, the drastic decrease in high-speed vehicles has significantly enhanced safety for everyone in these zones.
