Increasing Traveler Volume Management and Decreasing Ticket Fraud Using MT-CAB 3D Validation Gates

Transilien SNCF, the operator of the French suburban rail network, faced significant challenges managing high passenger volumes and increasing ticket fraud with its outdated 1990s-era access gates. To modernize its 380 stations across Île-de-France, it launched a project to improve passenger flow, deter fraud, and accept new payment media. SNCF chose vendor Conduent to design a new generation of validation gates to meet these goals.

Conduent designed and delivered the MT-CAB 3D validation gates, which use optical sensors to detect travelers and accept multiple ticket formats. The solution successfully managed large flows of 35 travelers per minute per gate and significantly reduced unauthorized access. By June 2019, 140 gates were installed at the busy Saint-Lazare station alone, handling approximately 380,000 daily validations. The project's success led to a plan for Conduent to install an additional 1,600 gates over ten years, helping SNCF generate revenue and streamline operations.
