Government of South Australia, Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure - Customer Case Study

The Government of South Australia's Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure sought to upgrade its 25-year-old magnetic ticketing system to a modern contactless solution for its bus, tram, and train networks. The challenge was to ensure a smooth transition for the 1.3 million residents of Adelaide without any service interruption, while also accommodating occasional users who still required magnetic tickets and adding new functions like online reloading. They partnered with Conduent to address this complex requirement.

Conduent designed and deployed a customized mixed ticketing system based on its Fare Collection System. The solution included new validators, an on-board vending machine for trains and trams, and was implemented over 18 months without interrupting service. The result was a resounding success, with contactless tickets being adopted for 85% of validations within months. The Conduent solution also provided new advanced functions, including real-time passenger information and detailed fleet management tools, leading to improved service quality across the network.
