Case Study: De Lijn introduces tap-and-go ticketing for Flanders public transport with Conduent

A Conduent Case Study

De Lijn rolls out tap & go ticketing for 500 million passengers with Conduent

De Lijn, the public transport authority for the Flanders region of Belgium, faced the challenge of making its ticketing system more accessible and user-friendly to reduce barriers for occasional travelers and combat road congestion. Their existing system was perceived as complicated and expensive, which discouraged public transport use in a region where the personal car was preferred. To address this, De Lijn partnered with Conduent Transportation to implement a new digital fare collection solution.

Conduent implemented its ATLAS® Ops account-based ticketing system, which introduced a "tap & go" payment method using contactless bank cards and smartphones. The solution rolled out in two phases, first enabling secure credit card payments for occasional passengers and then introducing full account-based ticketing for commuters. This removed key barriers to using public transport by allowing passengers to pay with media they already use daily. The new system also laid the groundwork for De Lijn to integrate other regional mobility services into a seamless strategy, ultimately making travel in Flanders more flexible and personalized.
