A commercetools Case Study
REWE Group, a major European grocery retailer, needed to modernize its product information management to support aggressive online growth: managing more than 2 million products and versions, handling diverse food temperature zones and location-specific attributes, and ingesting data from multiple external sources. To meet requirements for time-to-market, scalability and omnichannel readiness, REWE chose the commercetools ecommerce platform and its integrated PIM as the foundation for a microservice-based architecture.
Using commercetools, REWE built a cloud-based PIM accessed via APIs and implemented three Java microservices (Importer, Validator, Publisher) with a soft migration from the legacy system. Since the April 2016 launch REWE reports higher stability and speed, improved data quality via the Validator, active use by Category Management, the ability to add new customer-facing attributes (e.g., “vegan” filters), faster imports and lower hosting/maintenance costs — all while supporting scale across millions of products.
