How NBCUniversal achieved a strong start to implementing a new modern commerce architecture

NBCUniversal, the global media conglomerate behind NBC, Telemundo and dozens of TV channels and theme parks, wanted to trial modern headless commerce to monetize fans who wanted to buy products tied to films, series and articles. New to MACH and headless architectures, NBCUniversal turned to commercetools (with partners Mirakl, Contentstack and EPAM) to provide cloud-native cart, PIM and commerce building blocks that could support a future‑proof, composable storefront.

commercetools delivered the core commerce platform and integrations (including Mirakl for marketplace inventory) alongside a Contentstack CMS implementation, enabling NBCUniversal to launch the first SyFy storefront in just a few months. The solution supports unlimited product types, sells merchandise through six main retail channels, and has driven rapid personalization and roll‑out of new brands—demonstrating a successful, scalable start to NBCUniversal’s modern commerce strategy.
