How LEGO put the building blocks in place to ensure website stability even during major traffic surges

LEGO, the global B2C toy maker, was struggling with reliability and scalability: the site crashed during major product launches and Black Friday peaks. To fix this, LEGO partnered with commercetools and moved to a cloud-native MACH commerce platform, reworking its architecture to gain control, resilience and the ability to auto-scale.

commercetools implemented a cloud commerce solution and modular MACH architecture across LEGO’s digital ecosystem, enabling auto-scaling, faster experimentation and low-cost R&D. The change produced measurable gains — a 7x increase in orders per second (from handling 7 to 35 orders/sec during peak launches) and the ability to absorb roughly 50× larger traffic peaks on Black Friday — while unlocking new channels and customized experiences.
