Commerce migration for an eCommerce pioneer

C.H.Beck, a nearly 250‑year‑old publisher and online retailer stocking over 14 million products, faced a 15‑year‑old, Microsoft‑centric monolithic commerce system that was costly to maintain, inflexible and unable to keep up with millions of daily dataset changes. To modernize while running day‑to‑day operations, C.H.Beck selected commercetools’ cloud‑native, headless microservices commerce platform (together with Microsoft Azure) to replace and decouple its legacy architecture.

Working with commercetools, the migration was done in phases: the monolith was gradually replaced with standard technologies and ~80 individually developed microservices that now run automated in Microsoft Azure. In ten months the project moved C.H.Beck’s catalog and backends (14 million products across four platforms) onto the new platform, delivering faster time‑to‑market, reduced hardware costs and a seamless, personalized omnichannel experience for customers.
