A Virtual Reality Solution Transforms Critical Neonatal Training

Cognizant partnered with the University of Newcastle to tackle a critical training gap in neonatal care: about 15% of births in Australia and New Zealand require some form of resuscitation, and developing a skilled workforce through traditional methods was time- and resource-intensive. The university wanted a way to give students a clear, realistic view of complex, time-sensitive procedures before they faced real patients.

The teams developed an AI-enabled VR/AR training program—delivered via Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, HoloLens and a cross-platform app—that simulates a real delivery room and offers practice mode with a virtual helper plus formal testing. The solution lets students train anytime, anywhere, accelerates learning, increases anatomical detail and accuracy beyond textbooks, and helps students master neonatal resuscitation more quickly and reliably, with implications for broader healthcare training adoption.
