HubSpot, the SaaS leader in inbound sales and marketing serving 40,000+ customers worldwide, needed a scalable way to deliver SSL to customer sites as the web shifted to “HTTPS everywhere.” Its 2015 shared SAN certificate approach required manual bundling and could take up to five days to deploy, leaving thousands of sites vulnerable and creating a backlog of customer requests—urgency amplified by Chrome’s plan to flag unencrypted sites.

Partnering with Cloudflare, HubSpot used a custom “SSL for SaaS” solution built on Cloudflare’s API and edge network to automate certificate provisioning (propagating in ~90 seconds) and integrate CDN, security, and Argo Smart Routing. The result: SSL deployed for 47,000 sites in five days, fewer support calls, and a 35% performance improvement, along with DDoS, bot mitigation, and improved availability.
