Docker boosts cache hit ratio to 99% and cuts S3 egress by two-thirds with Cloudflare

The customer Docker Inc. faced rapidly rising Amazon S3 egress costs from its Docker Hub platform, despite already using the Cloudflare CDN. Their high traffic volume meant that even with a 97% cache hit ratio, the remaining egress fees were substantial and nearly equal to their CDN costs.

Cloudflare implemented its Cache Reserve solution, which boosted Docker's cache hit ratio to over 99%. This 2% improvement eliminated roughly two-thirds of their S3 egress activity, with the cost reduction being almost an order of magnitude larger than the price of Cache Reserve. Cloudflare also provided security for private repositories through its Workers serverless compute platform.
