A Cloudflare Case Study
DigitalOcean, a fast-growing cloud provider that lets developers spin up cheap, private virtual servers in under a minute, had to protect the DNS infrastructure that routes traffic for its rapidly expanding customer base. With DNS servers increasingly targeted by malicious attacks, DigitalOcean wanted confidence that its DNS resolutions would remain fast and available worldwide even in the face of DDoS threats.
In July 2014 DigitalOcean deployed Cloudflare’s Virtual DNS as an early test customer, proxying and caching DNS requests at Cloudflare’s edge so attack traffic is stopped before it reaches DigitalOcean’s nameservers. The result: reliably serving about 10,000 DNS requests per second with 100% clean traffic, DDoS mitigation for its DNS infrastructure, reduced load on origin nameservers, and lightning-fast global DNS response times.
