Chocolatey is the package manager for Microsoft Windows, providing both open source and commercial tooling and a large community package repository. After explosive growth—downloads climbed from millions in 2013–2015 to over 50 million in the first half of 2016—Chocolatey needed an affordable way to scale, cache static content and prevent backend overload while continuing to serve legitimate traffic.

Chocolatey adopted Cloudflare’s flat-rate CDN, which caches content across 151+ data centers, cutting bandwidth and infrastructure needs by over 90% monthly. Using Page Rules for fine-grained caching and Cloudflare’s DDoS protection (including “I’m Under Attack” mode) gave Chocolatey predictable costs, easy scale and dramatic cost savings while keeping the site reliable.
