Case Study: Vodafone Automotive achieves real-time, scalable usage-based insurance with Cloudera

A Cloudera Case Study

Preview of the Vodafone Case Study

Enabling usage-based insurance policies with real-time vehicle telemetry data

Vodafone Automotive, part of Vodafone IoT, provides telematics services—like stolen vehicle tracking, emergency assistance, fleet management and usage-based insurance (UBI). Facing rapid growth in high-frequency vehicle telemetry and strict privacy expectations, the company needed a scalable platform to collect, store and analyze driver data (GPS, speed, acceleration) so insurers could generate fair, precise risk profiles while protecting user privacy.

Working with Cloudera, Vodafone Automotive rebuilt its architecture on Apache Kafka, Spark and HBase to enable real-time streaming and processing with latencies of just a few seconds. The platform handles more than 120 million messages daily and up to four years of driving history, supports over 10 active use cases, improves crash/theft response and insurer scoring, and establishes a foundation for machine learning–driven predictive maintenance and proactive device monitoring.
