A Cloud Foundry Case Study
T-Mobile, the “un-carrier” wireless provider, needed a faster, more flexible way to develop and operate software than its existing Java-based monolithic application and seven-month development cycle allowed. To support its innovation goals and handle rapidly changing demand, T-Mobile turned to Cloud Foundry, including VMware Cloud Foundry (PCF), as part of its software development lifecycle and operations strategy.
Cloud Foundry helped T-Mobile break apart the monolith into microservices and use containers for consistent deployments, dramatically streamlining delivery from months to hours. The new platform also made it much easier to scale during peak periods, and by May 2017 T-Mobile was managing 3,000 application instances. According to Cloud Foundry architect Brendan Aye, the company gained the ability to ship code faster, scale rapidly, and recover from risk just as quickly.
