Case Study: IBM enables Cloud Foundry deployment on OpenPOWER with Cloud Foundry cf-release

IBM deploys Cloud Foundry cf-release for OpenPOWER in version 240

The customer, IBM, required a solution to deploy Cloud Foundry on their OpenPOWER systems, which are based on the IBM POWER microprocessor architecture. The challenge was that the standard Cloud Foundry release was built for the x86_64 processor architecture and needed to be adapted for the ppc64le architecture of OpenPOWER systems to enable building and testing of applications.

The vendor, Cloud Foundry, provided a pre-built cf-release binary tarball for OpenPOWER and documented the steps to deploy it using BOSH. This solution allowed IBM to successfully deploy Cloud Foundry on OpenStack running on OpenPOWER hardware. As a result, IBM was able to build, upload, and run a sample Node.js application using a newly created buildpack for the POWER architecture, demonstrating a functional cloud-native platform on their systems.
