Orthopaedic Clinic Reduces Outstanding Balances at Point-of-Service

UAB Department of Surgery’s orthopaedic clinic needed a faster, more patient-friendly registration process to shorten wait times, improve satisfaction, verify insurance in real time, and collect copays and outstanding balances at point of service. They partnered with Clearwave to deploy self-service registration kiosks and related services to streamline check-in, reduce paperwork, and integrate with their GE Centricity practice management system.

Clearwave implemented kiosks (with an EHR integration to GE Centricity) and real-time eligibility checks, leading to immediate, measurable improvements: more than 200 patients checked in on day one, average check-in times fell by about 63% (from 6:56 to 1:56; returning patients now under 1:20), patient kiosk utilization exceeded 90%, and point-of-service collections rose substantially (average increase ~57.6%, with some measures reporting over 100% increases). Clearwave’s solution also reduced paperwork and claims rejections while streamlining staff workflows.
