The First White House Social Media Archive

The White House, under the Obama Administration, needed a secure, scalable way to archive official social media content to meet Presidential Records Act requirements as it became the first “social media president.” The challenge was preserving a huge volume of posts, photos, videos, and metadata across more than 100 accounts and multiple platforms.

CivicPlus’ Social Media Archiving platform helped the White House capture and transfer records to the National Archives and Records Administration, while also enabling a public-facing archive. CivicPlus processed more than 10 million records, produced over 450 exports totaling more than four terabytes, and launched a searchable archive of more than 250,000 posts in less than eight weeks.
