SMART move by NZ libraries pays off

SMART Libraries faced the challenge of sharing and managing a vast, mobile collection across 22 library branches while preserving local identity and serving around 100,000 borrowers. The network needed to track nearly 500,000 items, streamline inter‑library loans and make the combined catalogue easily discoverable — a complex logistic and IT problem that led SMART Libraries to partner with Civica and its Spydus library management solution.

Civica implemented its cloud‑based Spydus platform and managed services, including OPAC search, reservation workflows, notifications and 24/7 support, enabling real‑time tracking and efficient fulfillment. The result: almost 90,000 items exchanged since launch in 2010, a fulfilment rate above 90% with most items delivered within three days, Porirua reserves rising from 17,000 to 37,000, and 98% customer satisfaction — all delivered on a system rolled out in about six months by Civica.
