A Civica Case Study
The University of Edinburgh’s Accommodation, Catering and Events (ACE) department—responsible for catering for 2,000 catered-hall students, multiple retail outlets, conference services and hotels—faced rapid growth and a poorly structured, unclean stock database. To centralise and scale its operations the University chose Civica’s Saffron catering management software to tackle fragmented stock data and improve operational control.
Civica implemented Saffron by importing and cleansing legacy data, establishing a clear item/recipe hierarchy and activating multiple modules (EPoS stock down‑dating, stock and variance reporting, purchase control and invoicing, sales orders, recipes and costings, allergen & nutrition portal, BI dashboard, supplier control and wastage reporting). The deployment gave ACE tighter management of new, live and non‑live items, improved reporting and wastage control, faster rollout of new features and a training environment for staff—enabling the University of Edinburgh to scale its catering operations with better cost, compliance and stock control.
