Improving public service experience with Civica’s Spydus Library Management System

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames needed to modernize its library service, improve customer experience and cut costs after decades on Axiell’s OpenGalaxy and inefficiencies within the London Libraries Consortium. Following a thorough tender process they selected Civica’s Spydus Library Management System (and to join the SELMS consortium) to deliver a virtual-library vision that included community information, digital images, archival records and events booking.

Civica implemented Spydus across all 12 libraries, enabling a full stocktake, accurate CIPFA returns and smarter handling of consortium loans (about 40% of reservations were identified as unnecessary). By migrating to Spydus and joining SELMS the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames achieved estimated savings of around £45,000 over five years, increased borrowing, massive reductions in consortium loans and improved local availability of stock.
