New York City’s Correctional Health Services improves patient experiences with telehealth solution

NYC Health + Hospitals’ Correctional Health Services, which delivers care across the city’s 12 jails for roughly 55,000 people a year, faced a costly, time‑consuming challenge: moving incarcerated patients to hospital specialty clinics disrupted care and strained security and transport resources. The organization needed a way to improve access to specialist care while reducing reliance on inmate transportation.

They deployed Cisco video‑collaboration telehealth tools (desktop endpoints, Jabber and WebEx) connecting jails, Bellevue and specialty clinics, enabling remote specialist consultations for conditions like hepatitis C and expanding to urology, rheumatology and more. The program reduced trips to Bellevue, eased stress for patients and staff, improved patient experiences and treatment capacity, and allowed Correctional Health Services to scale telehealth across more facilities.
